Anti-corruption event at a commercial college

The BAK organized another successful anti-corruption event for upper secondary school students.

On 2 March 2018, the BAK, in cooperation with Transparency International Austrian Chapter (TI-AC), carried out an anti-corruption event for about 120 students at a commercial college in Vienna’s 10th district.

The adolescents showed great interest in the event, which was also due to its excellent preparation by the responsible teacher, Ms Evelyn Meyer, and the headmaster, Mr Jörg Hopfgartner, who are both extremely committed to raising students’ awareness of corruption. A group of students focusing on corruption in their pre-scientific papers participated in the implementation of the event.

After a few welcoming words by Mr Hopfgartner, Ms Meyer and the Director of BAK, Andreas Wieselthaler, and a brief thematic introduction, the students, separated into groups, were provided with the opportunity to familiarize themselves with diverse topics related to corruption prevention and promotion of integrity, which were presented at eight stations. For the first time, an IT forensics station was part of the event. It provided information on specific IT programmes as well as on seized data and data analysis. The participants were particularly impressed by the high degree of surveillance due to the use of mobile phones, computers or social media platforms and by how transparent individuals have become. Seemingly deleted data, for instance, are often not deleted at all and can be recovered.

The anti-corruption event not only contributed to raising students’ awareness of corruption and promoting integrity and ethical behaviour in this target group, but also to stimulating critical thinking. Last but not least, the BAK received a very positive feedback from the students.
