Global Compact General Meeting on 5 March 2018

In September 2015, the Member States of the United Nations adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. They committed themselves to implement 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at national, regional and international level. Designed as a platform for promoting the exchange between business, civil society and politics, the United Nations Global Compact aims to advance the achievement of these goals.

On 5 March 2018, this year’s first General Meeting of the Global Compact Network Austria, focusing on the issue of "anti-corruption”, took place in studio 44 of the Casinos Austria premises in Vienna. The fight against corruption is one of the objectives of the UN SDG 16 ("Substantially reduce corruption and bribery in all their forms”) and is also stated in the tenth of the Global Compact Principles ("Businesses should work against corruption in all its forms, including extortion and bribery”).

The event was attended by around 40 experts from the field of corporate social responsibility representing the private sector, civil society, and administration. Following a keynote speech on corruption prevention in international business transactions, the Head of the BAK’s Department of Prevention, Education and International Cooperation, Martina Koger, presented the Austrian National Anti-Corruption Strategy (NACS), which had been adopted by the Austrian Council of Ministers on 31 January 2018. She particularly stressed the importance of cooperation between all sectors (private sector, civil society and public administration) in developing an action plan serving as a basis for implementing the NACS.

At the end of the meeting, information on the latest developments within the Global Compact Network Austria was provided and the five "SDG Teams” were presented. These teams are working on specific SDG issues and are thus intended to contribute to achieving the SDGs in Austrian companies.
