Exchange of experience between United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and BAK

Karoline Edtstadler, State Secretary at the Austrian Federal Ministry of the Interior, stressed the importance of international cooperation in the fight against corruption.

On 20 February 2018, around 20 representatives from different areas of the Austrian Federal Bureau of Anti-Corruption (BAK) and the UNODC Division for Treaty Affairs came together in the Austrian Federal Ministry of the Interior to share current projects and plans.

Already at the opening of the event, Ms Edtstadler stressed the importance of cooperation and exchange in the fight against corruption. Director-General Hermann Feiner from the Austrian Federal Ministry of the Interior pointed to the successful cooperation between UNODC and the BAK in the past, the mutual support for projects and events, and common challenges in combating corruption to be addressed in the future.

Subsequently, John Brandolino, Director of the UNODC Division for Treaty Affairs, and Andreas Wieselthaler, Director of BAK, presented their institutions’ current projects. The representatives of both sides emphasized that the proper implementation of risk management procedures in the public sector is an essential tool of structural corruption prevention in organizations. The promotion of integrity as well as prevention approaches focusing on raising the awareness of students are key priorities of both the BAK and UNODC.
